Support Local and Global Advocacy with PlayCo

Advocacy is a never-ending, critical way to positively engage with our complex, intersectional world. While our staff at PlayCo can’t uplift every cause that spurs us into action, we want to highlight some organizations that are doing important work here in NY state and internationally.

"Anera has worked for over half a century to help 'those hurt by conflicts in Palestine, Syria and Jordan live with purpose and hope.' They focus on people, working with local partners to provide resources for both immediate relief and longer term, sustainable health, education and economic development. With no political or religious affiliation, they work directly within communities to 'get help where it's needed most.' PlayCo has supported artists and presented stories with roots in these communities, and this is another way I personally choose to support now." - Kate Loewald, Founding Producer

The Bail Project

"The Bail Project operates in multiple states including New York and provides essential cash bail services for people experiencing poverty. The prison industrial complex makes it easy for anyone to get ensnared in it and be detained for years before trial. Paying bail allows individuals to prepare their defense while staying in contact with loved ones and handling important business at home. When bail money is refunded after a client’s case is closed, the money goes directly back into Bail Project circulation." - Mieko Gavia, Business Manager

"As cultural workers in NYC, we are fortunate to live and make art on this land. At PlayCo we believe that as a field we owe a debt to its original inhabitants for this privilege. To begin repaying this debt in a small but meaningful way, we invite you to join us in supporting the cultural programming of the Delaware/Lenape, the original inhabitants of Lenapehoking. The Tribe’s cultural programs—focused on language revitalization, honoring tradition keepers, and preserving cultural heritage—are vital to ensuring that their identity and ancestral knowledge continue to flourish for generations to come." - PlayCo Staff

Make The Road NY

"The United States is a country founded on immigration, and this informed PlayCo's mission when we founded the company as immigrants or first-generation citizens ourselves. NYC thrives because of its diversity, and our theatre's global vision guides the theatre we make. Despite our nation's traditionally stated values and aspirations, U.S. history reveals a record of exploitation and callous disregard toward many of those who flee their homeland and seek asylum. With an incoming administration that ran on a platform that vilifies undocumented Americans and is promising mass deportation, now is the time to get involved and become a part of the important work being done by immigration advocacy groups like Make The Road nationwide." - Kate Loewald, Founding Producer

The National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network

"Mental healthcare is as much a medical need as dental, vision, or primary care - yet culturally competent practitioners for the queer and trans community and communities of color are scarce. I know firsthand that mental healthcare that only addresses internal thought patterns and ignores systemic causes of trauma and stress can leave one feeling alone, unheard, and uncared for. The National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network focuses on healing justice—which addresses structural, social, and individual factors that influence health—and works toward a future where holistic health care interrupts the medical industrial complex and creates new, healthier modes of community care." - Mieko Gavia, Business Manager

"Founded in 1996 at Sing Sing, Rehabilitation Through The Arts provides year-round trainings and workshops in theatre, dance and more for people experiencing incarceration, providing them with the skills to work through their emotions and express themselves when they reconnect with friends and family upon their release. RTA demonstrates the need for rehabilitation and how art can help people process and heal, especially in the face of the US’s overwhelming system of incarceration and collective punishment." - Sher Jamal Stone, Communications & Community Associate

US Food Sovereignty Alliance

"Today, one in every ten people in the United States (including one million New Yorkers) lives in a food desert, meaning they don’t have regular, affordable access to fresh and culturally appropriate food, which disproportionately affects communities of color in both urban and rural areas. 'Food sovereignty' is a principle which gives communities control over the production, distribution, and consumption of food locally. As a child of working class immigrants, I know that food is culture, lineage, and safety for my community; at PlayCo, we often make new connections and find common ground around a good meal. It’s a natural extension for us to platform collectives like the US Food Sovereignty Alliance, which centralizes resources to support food workers and the revitalization of food deserts around the country, intersecting with indigenous rights and land back efforts, reparations for Black and brown communities, and climate activism." - Annie Jin Wang, Associate Director for Artistic Programming

"Food and hospitality are part of PlayCo’s long standing core values. From our early days with Cabaret Gourmet to productions that center food like Amir Nizar Zuabi’s Oh My Sweet Land to our recently launched Community Potlucks, PlayCo centers food, hospitality, and art to nourish our community both physically and spiritually. World Central Kitchen shares these core values by providing food and meals to communities in crisis and in need of such nourishment and care." - Rob G. Bradshaw, Executive Producer
